- Eleanor BLAKE was a convict – trial at Middlesex Assizes for stealing a watch and money from one Phineas TAYTASAC, a merchant and sentenced to transportation for 7 years, sailed on the ship “Emu” which was captured by the American privateer “Holkar” – after being freed by the Americans the female convicts were landed on the island of St Vincent – one of the Cape Verde Islands – and sent back to England, eventually arriving on the ship “Broxburnbury” 28 July 1814.

- Emu. Royal Navy, 10 gun brig. Captain Foster. Left Sydney for England via the Cape of Good Hope on 25 March 1816 but ran into a hurricane approaching the South African coast, lost a topmast and ran on to a rock in Simon’s Bay. Refloated but apparently condemned and used as a wood vessel until ashore in a gale and broken up.

I am researching Bryan Overend, one time captain of Lady Nelson and Estramina, and crew member of Emu when it sank at Cape Town 1816. He disappears from sight after this. Do you have any information on Bryan, please.

Hi David, I do not know of Bryan but will certainly keep my eyes open . My research has been impeded this year by very poor internet access which I think will soon be remedied. All the best to you with your research. Yrs Lynne.

Thank you, Lynne,
First, I made a mistake, Emu sailed from Hobart in 1816 but sank 1817.
I understand that the Podargus collected the crew and cargo later and took them onto London. At moment I am having no luck bringing Podargus up on net. I am wondering if Bryan went with the Podargus, was he drowned in the sinking, or did he stay and go native.
Regards,
David

David, I don’t think the two Emus are the same ship are they ? The Australian Shipwrecks site lists several Emus. I shall look for Podargus as well. Yrs Lynne.
